Field Guide Painting: Thrush, Wrens, etc.

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

I finished!

This is my last field guide painting from the Merritt Island, Florida bird list. It includes Thrush, Wrens, and the last few others.

I started the project in May 2010. Almost 3 years later and having painted 270 birds, I have learned so much! I started in hopes that in painting all the birds I would become better at identifying the birds here. It has helped tremendously, but I still have a long way to go and a lot more to learn. This project was just the beginning.

Check out all the birds together…

(This is the bird checklist I used for Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.)

Sea Creatures Painting

Sunday, February 10th, 2013

New painting! It’s a Sea Creatures chart. It’s not specific like my birds paintings, it features “general” sea creatures… Whale, Shark, Dolphin, Octopus, Eel, Seahorse, Jellyfish, Stingray, and Turtle.

Prints are 13×19 and available on Etsy.

I would love to do some more specific charts of sea creatures but they’re so mysterious living under the sea, and there is much still unknown… making it a lot more difficult to study and paint charts!

Field Guide Paintings: Butterflies

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

I have had many requests for this field guide painting… butterflies!

Featuring Buckeye, Mourning Cloak, Viceroy, Monarch, Red Admiral, Queen, Question Mark, Great Swallowtail,  and Great Spangled Fritillary.

I already made prints and put them up on Etsy, here.

Field Guide Painting: Penguins.

Penguins are done!

Field guide painting: Birds of Eastern North Carolina

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Last month I did this painting of the birds of Eastern North Carolina. This was a commission, and such a fun project. I’d love to do more specialized field guide paintings for areas all over the world!

While most of the birds in my paintings are the colorful male birds, it was requested that I include the female cardinal in this one. I was happy to oblige, they are such beautiful birds!

I will have prints of this on my Etsy shortly.

Field Guide Painting: Woodpeckers, Owls, Goatsuckers, etc.

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Finished another field guide painting in my Merritt Island, Florida birding series.

This one has the woodpeckers, owls, goatsuckers, and some other odd ones… getting to the end of the list and it can be a bit hard to decide which set to put some of these birds in.

Features:

Barn Owl

Barred Owl

Belted Kingfisher

Black-billed Cuckoo

Common Nighthawk

Chuck Will’s Widow

Downy Woodpecker

Eastern Screech Owl

Great Horned Owl

Ground Dove

Hair Woodpecker

Mourning Dove

Northern Bobwhite

Northern Flicker

Pileated Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-headed Woodpecker

Rock Pigeon

Short-eared Owl

Smooth-billed Ani

Whip-poor-will

Wild Turkey

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Now I am working on finishing the warblers! They are the prettiest birds.

Acorns

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

New watercolor painting, an Acorns chart-

I used a North American wildlife book in reference to painting this chart. I am assuming these are the most common acorns found in North America, even though it leaves out some of the ones I am used to in Florida. I also learned that the sizes of acorns from the same type of Oak can vary a lot (especially depending on what part of the country it’s in) so I didn’t worry about accuracy in size. But I love it! Acorns are so cool.

The Morbid Mushrooms Painting.

Monday, February 27th, 2012

I have finished a new Mushroom Chart, I am calling it “The Morbid Mushrooms” because for this one I picked the ones with the creepiest names out there. I love having collections of paintings so I did this one in thinking it could compliment my previous Mushroom Chart, or the Carnivorous Plants Chart!

Featuring…
Witch’s Hat
Corpse Finder
Deadly Dapperling
Poison Pie
Destroying Angel
Deadly Parasol
Fool’s Mushroom
Red-staining Inocybe
Devil’s Urn
The Sickener
Dead Man’s Fingers
Deadly Webcap
Autumn Skull Cap

I end with the first Mushroom Chart I did a while back.

Both will be available as prints when my shop opens back up in May!
